Friends of the New Orleans Public Library

About the Friends

Your library need Friends like you. We can never have too many Friends!

The FNOPL was established in 1957 to mount a campaign to build the current central library building.  In the past five decades, the Friends have raised funds for books and many other needs, encouraged public support of bond issues and increased awareness of the library’s value to our community through events and activities.

The Friends have provided funding for

  • Scholarships for dedicated staff members to pursue advanced librarian degrees
  • Book purchases
  • Large scale equipment such as micro fiche machines and coin machines
  • Activities and performances encouraging children to read
  • Author appearances
  • Promotional Campaigns for the Library
  • Black history Month
  • Summer Reading Program
  • Teen Read Week
