Prior to Katrina the Friends held two big sales annually. With the closing of the libraries after the storm, the Friends organization which is more than 50 years old believed it was important to help re-connect the citizens of New Orleans with books on a regular basis. In addition a tremendous number of books were sent to New Orleans from donors across the United States and overseas. The Friends took on the responsibility of getting these books to the people and to schools as they opened. The library gave the Friends the use of the Carriage House and a community institution was born
